We farm over 70 hectares of land, and we reserve 40 hectares for the beef herd, and pig paddocks. Our organic beef is 100% grass-fed, and they are out in the field for most of the year, apart from a few months over the worst of the winter, when they are tucked up in the barns and enjoying our own hay and silage. The pigs are rather too much free-range (escape artists!), rooting around the fields and orchards, and fed on organic feed and leftover organic veg waste too. (For more on the Soil Association’s organic welfare standards, click here.)
Another 5 hectares are enjoyed by our inquisitive free-range laying hens; they all like to be part of the action and are always trying to hop over the fence and take a free tractor ride. They are also fed on organic feed and leftover veggies, as well as grazing the fields and searching out tasty bugs on their travels.
Our vegetables grow on over 10 hectares of loamy (and stoney) land, around the farm. We have 10 polytunnels of varying size, so can grow heat-loving crops such as tomatoes, aubergines and even melons in summer, and lots of delicious Oriental salad mixes in winter. Our lake is in the middle of the farm, providing us with plenty of water for irrigation, and above all is the perfect habitat for wildlife (and us for a summer swim!). Our packing shed’s two cold rooms allow us to always keep your veg and meat totally fresh before delivery.
The Farm Shop is at the front of the veg shed, so you can always peek around the corner and see us packing your veg box with freshly picked produce – and you’re welcome to give us a hand!
