All our activities on the farm respect nature, wildlife, and encourage biodiversity – both plants and animals (even crawly ones). We work with nature, rather than try to dominate it – it makes a lot more sense in the long run, as nature will always win eventually! To control weeds and prevent disease build-up in the soil, we use crop rotations (plant the same crop families in different places each year); which means our potatoes see a lot of the farm as they don’t occupy the same plot of land for at least 6 years. We provide fertility to the soil by using green manures: nitrogen-fixing leguminous plants such as clovers take nitrogen out of the air and fix it into the soil for us, without the need for artificial fertilizers. Plus with all our animals around, we have of manure to use up! We use small tractors (from the faithful David Brown to the shiny Landini) to cultivate and move harvests around, so as not to compact the soil, and a lot of the weeding is done by hand rather than spraying herbicides. Well ok – sometimes we cheat a bit and use the good old fashioned wheel-hoe!
