Our farm to your plate

Local fresh produce is cheaper, healthier, greener and more convenient for you; so try us out today!

We are a family-run organic box scheme, delivering freshly produced fruit, vegetables, meat, eggs and extras around Swindon, Cirencester and Marlborough. We have an extensive farm shop in Purton, near Swindon, stocking a range of local produce; and we supply wholesale to pubs, restaurants, shops and festivals. We run regular Open Days where we’d love you to come and meet our cows, chickens, pigs. Or have a wander through our woodlands and check out the fertile fields and plentiful polytunnels.

About Our Farm

Farm Shop

We farm over 70 hectares of land, and we reserve 40 hectares for the beef herd, and pig paddocks. Our organic beef is 100% grass-fed, and they are out in the field for most of the year, apart from a few months over the worst of the winter, when they are tucked up in the barns and enjoying our own hay and silage. The pigs are rather too much free-range (escape artists!), rooting around the fields and orchards, and fed on organic feed and leftover organic veg waste too. (For more on the Soil Association’s organic welfare standards, click here.)

Our vegetables grow on over 10 hectares of loamy (and stoney) land, around the farm. We have 10 polytunnels of varying size, so can grow heat-loving crops such as tomatoes, aubergines and even melons in summer, and lots of delicious Oriental salad mixes in winter. Our lake is in the middle of the farm, providing us with plenty of water for irrigation, and above all is the perfect habitat for wildlife (and us for a summer swim!). Our packing shed’s two cold rooms allow us to always keep your veg and meat totally fresh before delivery.

Another 5 hectares are enjoyed by our inquisitive free-range laying hens; they all like to be part of the action and are always trying to hop over the fence and take a free tractor ride. They are also fed on organic feed and leftover veggies, as well as grazing the fields and searching out tasty bugs on their travels.

The Farm Shop is at the front of the veg shed, so you can always peek around the corner and see us packing your veg box with freshly picked produce – and you’re welcome to give us a hand!

How we work

All our activities on the farm respect nature, wildlife, and encourage biodiversity – both plants and animals (even crawly ones).

We work with nature, rather than try to dominate it – it makes a lot more sense in the long run, as nature will always win eventually! To control weeds and prevent disease build-up in the soil, we use crop rotations (plant the same crop families in different places each year); which means our potatoes see a lot of the farm as they don’t occupy the same plot of land for at least 6 years. We provide fertility to the soil by using green manures: nitrogen-fixing leguminous plants such as clovers take nitrogen out of the air and fix it into the soil for us, without the need for artificial fertilizers. Plus with all our animals around, we have of manure to use up!

We use small tractors (from the faithful David Brown to the shiny Landini) to cultivate and move harvests around, so as not to compact the soil, and a lot of the weeding is done by hand rather than spraying herbicides. Well ok – sometimes we cheat a bit and use the good old fashioned wheel-hoe!
