All our activities on the farm respect nature, wildlife, and encourage biodiversity – both plants and animals (even crawly ones). We work with nature rather than to try to dominate it. We think that weeds are just good plants in the wrong place! To control weeds and prevent disease build-up in the soil, we use crop rotations (plant the same crops in different places each year); which means our potatoes
see a lot of the farm as they don't occupy the same plot of land for at least 6 years. We use small tractors (from the faithful David Brown to the shiny Landini) to cultivate and move harvests around, so as not to compact the soil, and a lot of the weeding is done by hand. Well ok – sometimes we cheat a bit and use the old fashioned wheel-hoe!
Back in October 2008, I applied for the Soil Association apprenticeship scheme, and started to work for Rowie and the guys. Every day I learn something new, whether sowing, weeding, planting or harvesting veg; and I love to try the flavours of new varieties in our recipes.
